Saint Peter’s Prep Hockey Program History
Prep hockey began practicing in 1973, sometimes at 4am and 6am, in preparation for becoming Prep’s newest varsity sport in 1974. On February 27th, Prep hockey dropped the puck for the first time, taking on Marist in a Hudson County Interscholastic Hockey Game at Roosevelt Stadium. Mark Ellerson ‘76 scored the first goal in Prep’s history, and Prep went on to win 5-2, capturing the County Hockey Championship.
Prep saw more success in the 1980s, capturing four division championships. Prep then captured two successive Central Division championships in 2003 and 2004, and made their first ever state final appearance in 2004. The following season, Prep joined the prestigious Gordon Conference and made a run to the state final again in 2007. The Saint Peter’s Prep Ice Hockey team has rapidly accelerated to New Jersey’s elite status. Prep competes in the State’s most competitive conference, The Gordon Conference; facing off versus perennial state powers nearly every other day.

In 2004 & 2007, the Marauders played at the Continental Airlines Arena while competing in the NJSIAA High School Ice Hockey Championships. Prep has also qualified for the NJSIAA State Tournament for the last seven years.
During its’ road to the Parochial Finals in 2004 & 2007, Prep knocked off previously #1 ranked Delbarton and Christian Brothers Academy in the Parochial Semi-Finals, 3-2 & 2-0 respectively.
The Marauders reached a #1 ranking for the week of January 16, 2007. It was the first time in the programs’ history to reach #1.

Many highly skilled players have worn the St. Peter’s sweater with great pride. Prep has been fortunate to occupy seven All State selections since 2004, as well as numerous All Area and Conference selections. In 2004, 2005 and 2007 players from St. Peter’s Prep were selected as the North Jersey Players’ of the Year. In addition to the many individual awards, the team was named North Jersey Team of the Year in 2004 & 2007.
